You Can’t Control Your Thoughts (But You Can Control Your Response)

We’ve all got thoughts constantly swirling around—racing in and out, saying things we didn’t invite, commentating on everything we do. And here’s the truth:

You don’t control your thoughts.
You don’t get to choose when they show up or what they say.

But you do get to control your awareness. You can decide how much you let those thoughts push you around. And that changes everything.

I Had a Month Where My Inner Voice Was on a Rampage

This past month hit me sideways.

It started with a 3-day fast. Good for me? Yes. Insightful? Certainly. Fun? Not at all. I was tired, foggy, and skipped workouts. After the fast, I needed a few days just to feel normal again—and then the cold going around the house hit me. Hard.

Work piled up. The kids needed attention. I wasn’t eating well. I still wasn’t training. My body felt off and my schedule was wrecked.
Then the sinus infection kicked in.

I started sleeping in, getting less done in the mornings. And right about then, that voice in my head? It started getting real nasty.

“You’re lazy.”
“You run a gym and can’t even take care of yourself.”
“You’re setting a bad example for your kids.”
“You’re weak.”
“You’re falling apart.”

Even though I knew most of that wasn’t true, it still got to me. That voice had become a constant background narrator, turning everything I did into proof that I wasn’t enough.

The Way Out: The Basics Still Work

Eventually, I caught myself. I realized I didn’t need a breakthrough or a big change. I didn’t need to “feel motivated” or overhaul my life.

I just needed to get back to the basics:

Move your body
Eat real food
Rest well
Do it again tomorrow

It’s not rocket science—but when you’re stuck, even simple things feel hard. And that’s when they matter most. You don’t need a perfect plan. You just need to take action.

Why Strength & Conditioning Helps More Than Just Your Body

At Formidable Strength and Conditioning here in Canby, we see this all the time—how much your mental health is tied to your physical health.

One workout wont always shift your mood.
One day of clean eating wont always clear your head.
One good night of sleep doesn’t reset everything.

BUT do all these things over and over. And yes it will certainly improve your mood, clear your head and help resets everything.

If you’re in a downward spiral, movement is usually the first step to pulling yourself out. That’s why group fitness, personal training, and showing up to your gym community matter. It’s not just about building strength—it’s about breaking out of those internal ruts.

You’re Not the Only One

That voice in your head? It’s shown up in every athlete, every coach, every parent, every person we’ve trained. You are not alone. You are not broken. You are not weak.

You’re just human.

The good news? We’ve been helping people like you in Canby, Oregon for over a decade. Whether you need help rebuilding momentum or just want a team in your corner, we’re here.

Final Thoughts: You Get to Choose What Happens Next

You don’t have to believe every thought that pops into your head. You just have to do the work you know will help.

Get to the gym.
Eat the food that fuels you.
Be kind to yourself when your voice isn’t.

And if you need help? We’ve got your back.
