There’s an old saying that goes something like this:
“Things happen slowly at first, and then all at once.”
This couldn’t be truer when it comes to fitness. We set a goal, start working toward it, and put in a ton of effort—but sometimes, it feels like we’re getting nowhere. Then suddenly, one day, everything clicks, and the results are undeniable.
At Formidable Strength and Conditioning, we see this happen all the time. Whether you’re starting CrossFit for the first time, returning after a break, or working through a personal training program, progress can feel slow—until it isn’t.
Why Progress Feels Slow (But It’s Happening)
Starting (or restarting) your fitness journey can feel like an uphill battle. You’re showing up, putting in the work, and yet… the scale isn’t budging. Meanwhile, your friend has lost 20 pounds in just a couple of months. Frustrating, right?
But here’s the truth: weight isn’t the only indicator of progress. In fact, it’s often a lagging indicator, meaning other changes happen first before the scale reflects them. Instead of just focusing on weight, consider these signs of progress:
- More energy throughout the day
- Improved mood and better sleep
- Increased strength and endurance in workouts
- Making healthier food choices naturally
- Doing more of the activities you love without feeling exhausted
These are all signs that your hard work is paying off, even if the number on the scale hasn’t moved yet.
The Boiling Water Analogy: Understanding Fitness Progress
Imagine you’re trying to boil a pot of water. You fill it with tap water (around 60°F), put it on the stove, and turn on the heat. You sit and watch, waiting for it to boil, but for a long time, it looks like nothing is happening.
If you didn’t know water needs to reach 212°F before it boils, you might think it’s not working and give up, turning off the heat before it reaches that point. But even though you can’t see it, the temperature is rising. If you keep going, eventually, the water will boil—but only because you stuck with it through the invisible progress phase.
Your fitness journey works the same way. You might not see visible results right away, but every workout, every healthy meal, and every good night of sleep is adding heat to your progress. You can’t skip from 60°F to 212°F in an instant, and you can’t shortcut sustainable weight loss, strength gains, or long-term health.
Stick With It—The Results Are Coming
At Formidable Strength and Conditioning, we focus on helping our members stay committed to the process. Whether you’re attending group CrossFit classes, working one-on-one with a personal trainer, or following our customized 12-week onboarding plan, we ensure that every step you take is moving you forward.
The key? Consistency. Show up, train hard, eat well, sleep enough, and manage stress. The results will come—maybe not today, maybe not next week, but if you keep going, one day, you’ll wake up and realize everything has changed.
So trust the process. Make small, sustainable changes. Keep going. Because you never know—you might be just one degree away from your breakthrough.
