They say only two things in life are certain: death and taxes. Well, I’m going to go ahead and add a third—injuries. At some point in your life, you’re going to get hurt. It’s just a fact.
Now, I won’t even try to give advice on death or taxes—those are way above my pay grade. But injuries? That’s something I can help with.
If You’re Hesitant to Lift Weights, Read This
If you’ve been avoiding weightlifting because you’re afraid of getting injured, this part is for you. If you already have a solid fitness routine, keep reading—there’s some important advice for you, too.
One of the most common concerns I hear from people hesitant to start working out—especially lifting weights—is that they’re afraid of getting hurt. While that’s a valid concern, it’s only part of the picture. What many people fail to realize is just how dangerous not lifting weights can be.
Life itself is risky. Sure, we don’t have to worry about lions chasing us down, and most of us live in relatively safe environments. But that doesn’t stop us from tweaking our backs while doing yard work, pulling a muscle picking up our toddler, or even injuring a hip just getting out of the car. As we age, our risk of falls and injuries only increases.
The Best Way to Prevent Injuries? Strength Training
Here’s the kicker: the less time you spend moving your body and putting good stress on it, the more likely you are to get hurt. The less time you spend improving your balance, coordination, and strength, the worse those injuries will be when they inevitably happen.
That’s why having a great coach or personal trainer—someone who truly knows what they’re doing—is so important.
Strength training, whether in a structured personal training program or in a CrossFit-style group class, is one of the best things you can do for your long-term health. Lifting weights increases bone density, improves mobility, and strengthens your body against the everyday challenges life throws at you. Run when you can. Jump when possible. Move in as many different ways as your body allows.
No, this won’t make you immune to injuries. Remember, they’re inevitable. But it will make you more resilient when they happen.
What To Do When You Get Injured
So, what happens when an injury does hit? Should you stop working out altogether?
Many people assume rest is the best solution. While some rest is necessary for the injured area (knee, shoulder, back, etc.), the worst thing you can do is stop moving entirely.
Your fitness habit—the discipline of showing up and staying active—is the most valuable thing you have. That habit should be protected at all costs.
This is where having a coach or personal trainer becomes crucial. A great coach will help you modify movements, scale workouts, and keep you accountable. There’s almost always something you can do:
- Hurt your upper body? You can still train your legs.
- Have knee issues? There are plenty of upper-body exercises to keep you strong.
And here’s another important truth—most injuries don’t heal properly on their own. Strengthening the affected area through rehab and proper movement is key to preventing future issues. This is another reason why working with a knowledgeable trainer is so beneficial.
Stay in the Gym—Even If You Have to Modify
Unless you physically cannot move, keep showing up. Even if all you do is walk in and stretch, you’re maintaining the habit of prioritizing your health. And in the long run, that is what matters most. Decades of consistent movement, strength training, and smart fitness choices are what make us strong, healthy, and happy.
