It’s that time of year again—sunny skies, longer days, vacations, BBQs, and… suddenly a cold beer just sounds like the perfect idea. Funny enough, I barely drink more than once a month. I know I usually don’t feel great after a couple drinks, but man—on a beautiful summer day? It’s tempting. Maybe it’s all those damn Corona commercials.

But here’s the thing—I don’t think I’m alone in this. As soon as the weather gets warm, our cravings for fun, tasty, not-so-healthy stuff seem to get louder. And that’s totally normal. We’ve worked hard all winter and spring—getting stronger in the gym, eating better, building momentum. We want to look and feel good for summer adventures.

But those same summer vibes—drinks, food, travel—can derail all that hard-earned progress if we’re not mindful.

So what’s the solution? Two words: Be intentional.

At Formidable Strength and Conditioning, we coach our members—whether they’re in personal training, group classes, or just getting started with strength training—to think ahead and act with clarity. Not restriction. Not guilt. Just intention.

Here’s a simple truth: the more you plan ahead, the better you’ll feel about the choices you make. Whether it’s a meal out, a vacation, or a few drinks, decisions made with long-term goals in mind help you avoid the “guilt spiral” that comes from impulsive choices.

Quick example:

You’re heading out with friends, and you know there’ll be food and alcohol. Before you go, ask yourself:

  • Do I want to drink tonight?
  • Is this outing in line with my weekly goals?
  • Will this set me back or give me a healthy mental break?

If the answer is yes, great—own that choice and enjoy it. Guilt-free. If the answer is no, great—stick to your plan and keep building momentum.

Momentum Matters More Than Perfection

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about not losing the habit of being a health-conscious person. Even if you’re not in the gym, your mindset matters.

Take a walk. Do a quick bodyweight workout on vacation. Play outside. It’s not all or nothing—it’s about staying connected to the identity you’ve been working hard to build.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this bring me closer or farther from my goals?
  • Is it a choice I’m okay with in the long term?
  • What have my habits looked like this week?
  • Will this choice support or sabotage the progress I’ve made?

These questions help shift your focus from instant gratification to sustainable progress—and that’s what health and fitness are really about.
