WHAT IS HYROX? A COMPLETE GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

If you’ve been seeing the word HYROX pop up lately and wondering what it actually is — you’re not alone. It’s one of the fastest-growing fitness sports in the world right now, and for good reason. But if you’ve never heard of it, the name alone doesn’t tell you much.

Here’s everything you need to know.

WHAT IS HYROX?

HYROX is a fitness race. Not a marathon. Not a CrossFit competition. Not a Spartan obstacle course. It’s its own thing — and what makes it unique is that the race is always identical.

Every HYROX event, in every city, around the world, follows the exact same format:

8 rounds of 1 kilometer of running, each followed by one functional workout station.

That’s it. Eight runs. Eight stations. You finish when you’ve done all of them.

The eight workout stations are:

  • SkiErg (1,000 meters)
  • Sled Push (50 meters)
  • Sled Pull (50 meters)
  • Burpee Broad Jumps (80 meters)
  • Rowing (1,000 meters)
  • Farmers Carry (200 meters)
  • Sandbag Lunges (100 meters)
  • Wall Balls (75-100 reps depending on division)

No Olympic lifting. No technical gymnastics movements. No handstand walks or muscle-ups. Everything in HYROX is straightforward and learnable — which is a big part of why it’s so accessible.

WHO IS HYROX FOR?

This is the question we get most often, and the honest answer is: more people than you’d think.

HYROX is for the person who likes to run and lift but has never had a program that combined both into something with a finish line. It’s for the competitive athlete who wants a real challenge. It’s for the person who’s been working out consistently but floating without direction. And it’s for the beginner who wants a goal worth training toward.

The race has different divisions — including doubles (you can race with a partner) and scaled options — so it genuinely meets you where you are.

What it is not: a race for elite athletes only. The vast majority of HYROX participants are everyday people with jobs and families who wanted something real to train for. If you can run and you’re willing to work, you belong on that course.

HOW DOES HYROX SCORING WORK?

Your score is your time. That’s it.

You start the clock when the race begins and stop it when you cross the finish line. Every penalty (for things like incomplete reps) adds time. Your goal on race day is to finish. After that, your goal is to come back and beat your time.

Because every race is identical — same movements, same distances, same stations — your progress is completely measurable across years and cities. You can compare your time from your first race to your fifth. You can see exactly where you lost time and exactly what to work on.

That measurability is one of the things that makes HYROX so addictive for people who try it.

WHAT DOES HYROX TRAINING LOOK LIKE?

Training for HYROX means building two things simultaneously: an aerobic engine and functional strength.

You need to be able to run — not fast, but sustained. And you need to be able to do meaningful work on each station after you’ve already been running. That combination — strength under fatigue — is what separates HYROX from just going to the gym.

Good HYROX programming blends longer conditioning pieces with strength work, practices the specific stations, and builds your ability to pace yourself intelligently across the full race. It also works on the mental side — learning to stay composed and keep moving when it gets hard.

At Formidable Strength & Conditioning in Canby, Oregon, our HYROX program meets on Saturdays at 7:30am. Membership is $125 for 4 weeks, with $35 drop-in sessions available. We’re a coaching-first gym, which means you won’t just be following a program — you’ll have a coach in the room with you every session.

IS HYROX POPULAR?

Yes — and growing fast. HYROX launched in 2017 and has expanded to hundreds of events across dozens of countries. In recent years it’s gone from a niche European fitness sport to a genuine global movement, with sold-out events in major cities worldwide.

Part of what’s driving the growth is exactly what makes it appealing for beginners: it’s competitive without being exclusive. You can race against the world-class athletes and the first-timers in the same event. Everyone runs the same course. The clock is the great equalizer.
